She won an award for her performance and the show was highly praised. Coleman was looking to audition for drama college in 2005, was offered Jasmine Thomas' role in Emmerdale. Coleman was nominated in 2007 for two Awards. In the British Soap Awards she was named Best Newcomer, and during the National Television Awards she was awarded the title of the Most Popular Newcomer. For the British Soap Awards of 2009 she was awarded in the categories Best Actress and Sexiest female in addition to the Best acting in a Drama. Coleman was nominated for Best Actress by the TV Choice Awards. Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman was the replacement for Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor since Arthur Darvill left the series, would be playing the role with Matt Smith. Moffat picked her to play the role because she worked the best alongside Smith and was able to talk more quickly than Smith.
