Coleman is from Lancashire. She was the head girl at Arnold School, Blackpool and received straight A's in her A level. She was awarded an award for her performance and the production was also received favourably. Coleman got the part as Jasmine Thomas while she was in auditions at the drama schools. Coleman has been nominated as Best Actress by the TV Choice Awards. Steven Moffat revealed at a Doctor Who Press Conference on March 21st, 2012 that Coleman was set to portray Matt Smith as the Doctor's Companion after Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and other characters have left the show. Moffat decided to choose her for the role since she seemed to have the most chemistry Smith. She also spoke faster than Smith.
