Steven Moffat of Doctor Who revealed in a news conference held on the 21st March 2012 that Coleman will replace Karen Gillan after she and Arthur Darvill had left. Moffat stated that he picked Coleman to play the role of companion because she could work best with Smith. Also, Moffat noted that she was more talkative than Smith.
