Steven Moffat, the producer of Doctor Who confirmed in a 21st March 2012 press announcement that Coleman will be Matt Smith's partner in the event that Karen Gillan left. Moffat selected her because of the way she worked with Smith and the fact that she had a faster speaking speed than Smith.
